In April 2025, auto manufacturers issued a wave of safety recalls across the U.S., addressing problems that range from faulty airbags and cameras to engine failures, brake fluid leak reports, brake function problems and fire risks. Collectively, these recalls impacted over 900,000 vehicles. However, nearly two-thirds of all U.S. vehicle recalls in April stemmed from a single issue: General Motor’s recall of almost 600,000 full-size trucks and SUVs due to potential engine failure, linked to manufacturing defects in its 6.2-liter V8 engines.

Electric and hybrid vehicles also featured prominently in April's recall news, with several relating to battery defects or software glitches that can cause fires, power loss or unintended acceleration. Notably, some of these recalls are follow-ups to earlier campaigns where initial fixes hadn’t fully resolved the safety of the vehicles.

April automotive recall news was dominated by a major announcement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration involving the entire GM team, as nearly 600,000 vehicles were recalled over serious engine defects.

In this article, we summarize a list of U.S. vehicle recalls announced in April 2025, detailing the affected vehicles' manufacturer, models, defect and number of units impacted.

🚗 Passenger Vehicle Recalls (Cars, SUVs, Pickups)

1. General Motors

This Detroit-based auto company is facing scrutiny after NHTSA documents noted serious defects with a number of their vehicles that share a gas engine, and may have connecting rod or crankshaft component problems due to supplier manufacturing or quality issues.

  • Models: Cadillac Escalade/ESV; Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe; GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon/XL.

  • Issue: Engines in the affected vehicles are at risk of catastrophic failure due to manufacturing defects in their 6.2-liter V8. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration probe also identified alleged reports of 12 crashes and 12 injuries, along with 42 fires but noted that the causes were not always clear and that 'all specifically alleged injuries' may not be directly linked to this defect. GM added that although it was continuing to increase engine production, they felt confident about having 'sufficient supply to service this recall campaign' as company estimates expect only a small percentage to need full replacements.

  • Units Recalled: 597,571 vehicles.

2. Ford Motor Company

In April, Ford issued recalls for several of their models for a variety of safety features and mechanical issues, including rearview camera failures, issues with the brake master cylinder, stalling risks due to battery software faults and potential engine fires. The recalls cover the following vehicles:

  • Models: 2015 Ford Expedition, F-250/F-350/F-450; 2015 Lincoln MKC, Navigator; 2022–2023 Ford Bronco.

    • Issue: Rearview cameras can fail to display an image (due to a faulty circuit board connector or software error), resulting in a blank or distorted screen when reversing.

    • Units Recalled: 289,618 vehicles.

  • Models: Ford 2021–2024 Bronco Sport; 2022–2023 Maverick.

    • Issue: In this Ford recall, SUVs and pickups have been identified to stall while driving due to a 12-volt battery control software error, increasing the risk of a crash. (These models had a previous recall in 2024 for the same issue, but many did not receive the required software fix.)

    • Units Recalled: 12,833 vehicles.

  • Models: Ford 2022 Expedition; 2021–2022 F-150; 2022 F-250/F-350/F-450/F-550; 2022 Maverick; 2022 Lincoln Navigator.

    • Issue: A trailer brake control module defect can prevent trailer brakes from working, increasing the stopping distance. (This is a second recall for a 2021 issue on these models that were never properly repaired.)

    • Units Recalled: 10,627 vehicles.

  • Models: Ford 2024–2025 F-150; 2024 Expedition; 2024 Lincoln Navigator.

    • Issue: A misaligned engine oil cup plug can cause a rapid oil leak, potentially leading to engine stalling or even a fire if the oil contacts hot components. Meanwhile a separate issue with the brake master cylinder may allow fluid to leak from the front wheel circuit into the brake booster, causing brake fluid contamination and compromising braking performance.

    • Units Recalled: 4,163 vehicles.

  • Models: Ford 2025 F-150 Hybrid.

    • Issue: An incorrect fuse in the high-voltage battery junction box can blow and result in sudden loss of drive power.

    • Units Recalled: 47 vehicles.

  • Models: Ford 2019–2020 Transit Connect vans.

    • Issue: A powertrain control module software issue (from an earlier recall repair) may allow the engine to overheat, increasing fire risk.

    • Units Recalled: 152 vehicles.

3. Tesla

Tesla has been in the spotlight for multiple recalls in 2025, including last month, which involved nearly all 2024–2025 Cybertrucks, affecting over 46,000 vehicles. Tesla also features in April's recall:

  • Models: 2024–2025 Cybertruck.

  • Issue: A cosmetic trim piece or ('cant rail') can detach from the vehicle while driving, potentially falling into the road as debris. This creates a hazard for other motorists and increases crash risk.

  • Unites Recalled: 46,096 vehicles.

4. Polestar

  • Models: 2021–2025 Polestar 2 EV.

  • Issue: The rearview camera image can fail to display when backing up due to a synchronization error between the parking camera and the infotainment system.

  • Units Recalled: 27,816 vehicles.

5. Porche

  • Models: Porsche 2022–2023 Taycan EV.

    • Issue: The front passenger airbag may not deploy in a crash because a sensor mat in the seat cushion can malfunction due to faulty occupant detection wiring.

    • Units Recalled: 9,735 vehicles.

  • Models: Porsche 2024–2025 Macan EV.

    • Issue: The rearview camera may not display an image when the vehicle is in reverse, due to a software bug. Additionally, a poor seal on the camera housing can allow moisture in and blur the view.

    • Units Recalled: 8,571 vehicles.

6. Hyundai

  • Models: 2025 Ioniq 5 N.

  • Issue: A performance software defect in this high-performance EV causes the Left-Foot Braking and 'N e-Shift' features to malfunction, resulting in reduced braking ability and even unintended acceleration in certain driving modes.

  • Units Recalled: 1,589 vehicles.

7. Volkswagen

  • Models: 2025 ID. Buzz electric van.

  • Issue: The third-row bench seat lacks a third seat belt; the bench is wide enough for three passengers but only equipped with two belts, meaning one occupant would be unrestrained.

  • Unites Recalled: 5,637 vehicles.

8. Volkswagen & Audi

  • Models: : Volkswagen & Audi 2021–2023 VW ID.4; 2022–2023 Audi Q4 e-tron & Q4 e-tron Sportback.

  • Issue: A gear display software error can fail to indicate when the car is in Neutral, which, if the parking brake isn’t applied, could lead to an unintended rollaway.

  • Units Recalled:  60,490 vehicles.

9. Volvo

  • Models: 2020–2022 S60, V60, XC60, XC90; 2020–2021 S90; 2022 V90.

  • Issue: A high-voltage battery defect in certain hybrid sedans/SUVs can cause an internal short-circuit, potentially leading to the battery overheating and catching fire. (Volvo advised owners not to charge these vehicles until fixed, given the fire risk).

  • Units Recalled: 7,483 vehicles.

🚚 Commercial & Heavy-Duty Vehicle Recalls

1. Autocar

  • Models: Autocar 2020–2026 'Legend' (DC) heavy trucks.

    • Issue: An incorrect blower motor fuse was installed, which may not blow when the blower motor is overloaded. This can allow a short-circuit and increase the risk of a vehicle fire.

    • Units Recalled: 1,000 trucks.

  • Models: Autocar 2023–2024 'Legend' (DC) heavy trucks.

    • Issue: The air brake system’s tank capacity is insufficient, meaning the air reservoir is too small to meet safety standards. This could reduce braking performance (longer stopping distances) and violates federal brake regulations.

    • Units Recalled: 5 trucks.

2. Blue Arc (Shyft Group)

  • Models: 2023–2024 all-electric delivery trucks.

  • Issue: The electric battery pack may be improperly sealed, allowing liquid to enter and potentially cause a high-voltage short or loss of isolation, raising fire and shock hazards.

  • Units Recalled: 23 vehicles.

3. Bollinger

  • Models: 2025 B4 electric commercial trucks.

  • Issue: The battery pack seal can fail, letting water intrude into the high-voltage battery. This may cause an electrical short, loss of drive power, or even a battery fire, and also poses a shock hazard to users.

  • Units Recalled: 17 trucks.

4. Great Dane

  • Models: 2025–2026 Champion Dry Van trailers.

  • Issue: Defective tires (Bridgestone R123 Ecopia) were installed with a belt oriented incorrectly, violating tire safety standards. The belt misalignment could lead to tire failure and increase crash risk.

  • Units Recalled: 16 trailers.

5. Isuzu

  • Models: 2025 NRR Electric trucks.

  • Issue: A cooling system defect caused by mixing incompatible coolants can create debris that clogs the cooling pump, leading to pump failure and a loss of drive power while the vehicle is in motion.

  • Units Recalled: 73 trucks.

6. Volvo Trucks North America

  • Models: 2023–2026 VN series semitractor trucks.

  • Issue: The hazard warning light switch’s backlighting can fail, meaning the hazard button might not illuminate. An unlit hazard switch could be hard to find in an emergency, delaying hazard light activation and increasing crash risk.

  • Units Recalled: 5,257 trucks.

Drivers reported the check engine light turning on unexpectedly - a warning sign of potentially serious engine failure - in GM’s recalled full-size trucks and SUVs, where defects in the 6.2-liter V8 engine could lead to catastrophic damage.

Each recall above was officially published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the manufacturers in April 2025, and dealers' notifications began within 60 days of the announcement. Owners are encouraged to contact their manufacturer or dealer for free repairs and to verify if their vehicle is under recall.

🔍 How to Check If Your Vehicle Has a Recall

Not sure if your car has been recalled? Here’s how to find out quickly and easily:

1. Find Your VIN

Your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-character code unique to your car. You can find it:
